Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway. The municipality covers 465 square kilometers, and sits on the peninsula of Bergenshalvøyen. The city center and northern neighborhoods are on Byfjorden, “the city fjord”, and the city is surrounded by mountains. Bergen is also known as the “city of seven mountains”.

The Flåm Railway is one of the world’s steepest railways. It is 20 kilometers long, with a descent of 865 meters and a gradient of one in 18. It also consists of 20 tunnels with a total length of 6 kilometers – evidence of the most daring and skillful engineering in the history of Norwegian railways.
